Subaru will reveal its new WRX at the New York International Auto Show on August 19 – the same event at which we will see the new Nissan Z also make its production world premiere.

The Big Apple’s preeminent motor show is shaping up to be a massive event for Japanese performance aficionados.

“Get ready for the global reveal of the rally legend’s new evolution,” Subaru said in a short press release.

“The 2022 WRX is a whole new beast and it’s about to be unleashed… We’ll be streaming the world premiere live and you don’t want to miss the reveal of all the upgrades to its engine, suspension, and aggressive style,” it added.

Subaru also released a teaser video showing an orange WRX cutting loose in the dust, which you can watch here.

Design-wise the angular new WRX sedan quite clearly borrows cues from the 2017 Viziv Performance Concept (below), with pronounced black fender flares and a GT-style silhouette.

Bigger changes are expected to be found under the skin, with the WRX expected to move to the Subaru Global Platform that underpins the current Impreza and XV, among other models.

It will reportedly upgrade to a version of the turbocharged 2.4-litre flat-four offered in the North American Ascent SUV, reportedly making somewhere around 213kW.

The current WRX produces 197kW of power and 350Nm of torque and runs both a six-speed manual and CVT options alongside signature all-wheel drive (AWD).

The new WRX’s list of safety and driver assistance equipment is expected to mirror that of the redesigned Levorg, and it’ll likely pick up a portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system like the new Outback.

Subaru is about to embark on a substantial overhaul of its performance range, with the new BRZ due before the end of 2021.

The new WRX and a more performance-focused Levorg are then set to arrive in early 2022.
