There’s a new Range Rover Sport on the horizon, but the venerable second-generation model continues to be one of Australia’s top-selling large luxury SUVs.

It’s essentially unchanged for 2022, though prices have increased incrementally of late.

A new generation of Range Rover Sport has been spied testing and may be revealed in 2022.

The current car offers one of the widest ranges of any vehicles in the segment, with a choice of inline-six petrol and diesel engines, supercharged V8 petrol engines, and a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid.

It goes up against the likes of the Audi Q7 and SQ7, the Mercedes-Benz GLE and its AMG counterpart, and the BMW X5 and X5 M Competition.

Engines

The 2022 Range Rover Sport’s 3.0-litre turbo-diesel inline-six is available in three different tunes, marketed as D250, D300 and D350.

The D250 produces 183kW of power and 600Nm of torque, the D300 produces 221kW and 650Nm, and the D350 produces 258kW and 700Nm.

0-100km/h times are 8.5 seconds, 7.3 seconds and 6.9 seconds, respectively.

There’s a choice of four-, six- and eight-cylinder petrol engines, too.

The plug-in hybrid uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 221kW of power mated to a 105kW electric motor, for combined outputs of 297kW and 640Nm. It has a 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds.

P400 models use a 3.0-litre inline-six petrol engine with 294kW of power and 550Nm of torque, with a 0-100km/h time of 5.9 seconds.

P525 models use a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine with 386kW and 625Nm, while the SVR and SVR Carbon Edition use an uprated version – referred to as P575 – producing 423kW and 700Nm.

0-100km/h times for the V8 models are 5.3 seconds for the P525 and 4.5 seconds for the P575.

Fuel Economy

The 2022 Range Rover Sport’s fuel economy varies dramatically based on the powertrain. Below are the combined cycle ratings for each powertrain:

  • D250: 8.0L/100km
  • D300: 8.0L/100km
  • D350: 8.4L/100km
  • PHEV: 2.8L/100km
  • P400: 9.2L/100km
  • P525: 12.8L/100km
  • P575: 12.8L/100km

The PHEV has an electric-only range of 48km.

Dimensions

The 2022 Range Rover Sport measures 4879mm long, 1983mm wide and 1780mm tall on a 2923mm wheelbase. The SVR and SVR Carbon Edition measure 4822mm long.

It has 221L of space behind the optional third row, or 780L behind the second row. In total, there’s 1686L behind the front row.

Servicing and Warranty

All 2022 Range Rover Sport models are covered by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Land Rover offers a five-year, 130,000km servicing plan (102,000km in the PHEV). It costs $1950 in the PHEV, $2250 with the petrol six, $2650 with the diesel six and $3750 with the V8.

Safety

The current generation of Range Rover Sport has never been tested by ANCAP or Euro NCAP. That makes it the only vehicle in the current Land Rover line-up to lack a rating from either safety authority.

“The current Range Rover Sport has not been selected for ANCAP or Euro NCAP testing, however its sister vehicle Range Rover was tested and achieved a five star rating when tested in 2012,” said a spokesperson from Jaguar Land Rover.

“All our vehicles are engineered to meet the highest safety standards and all future models will continue to meet the criteria of the relevant standards bodies.”
