The fifth-generation Acura Integra will be a sporty-looking five-door hatchback.

Due to be revealed in 2022, the new Acura Integra will likely replace the small ILX sedan in North America which has been on sale since 2012.

While many were hoping for a two-door model that would revive the spirit of the third-generation Integra Type R, Acura has chosen a far more practical body style with larger sales potential.

That said, the new Integra takes the model name back to its roots. The original Integra made its debut in 1985 as both a three- and five-door hatch.

Few details are known about the new Integra at this stage, but the company is promising to reveal more ahead of its debut next year.

Like all previous generations of the Integra, the new model is expected to share its underpinnings with the Honda Civic.

From the two teaser images revealed so far, the Acura Integra will have a completely unique body.

The slinkily-styled car has the brand’s signature light graphics, the Integra name embossed on both sets of bumpers, and a five-door body with more than a hint of the Mercedes-Benz CLA about it.

Today’s picture shows a vehicle with frameless door windows, although we’re not sure if this will flow through to the production vehicle.

It’s unknown which engines will be available in the Integra, but the 134kW/240Nm 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol mill used on upscale versions of the Civic seems likely.

There could also be a variant potentially using a detuned version of the 228kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo from the Civic Type R.

Earlier this month a new Honda Integra appeared on China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology website.

Unlike the upcoming Acura, this new Honda Integra is just a Civic sedan with a few styling tweaks at both ends. It will likely be sold by one of Honda’s joint venture partners in China, while the other partner sells the Civic.

With the new Chinese model, the Integra name returns to cars for the first time in 15 years.
