The first BMW to go front-wheel drive has reached its second generation.

The 2022 2 Series Active Tourer is likely to be revealed later this year, at which point it’ll replace the first-generation car that introduced the world to BMW cars built on the UKL platform that underpins the Mini Cooper.

Given its predecessor died in Australia during 2020, it’s unlikely the next-generation 2 Series Active Tourer will make the trip Down Under.

BMW sold 3696 examples between 2014 and 2020, with an annual peak of 1765.

If it does arrive locally, it’ll go head-to-head with the Mercedes-Benz B-Class in the luxury front-wheel drive MPV sales race.

Images posted by Cochespias on Instagram reveal the 2 Series Active Tourer will get headlights inspired by the 2 Series Gran Coupe, and a grille nicked from the X7 SUV.

The styling of the 2 Series Active Tourer points to what we can expect from the next-generation X1 SUV (pictured above).

The rear isn’t pictured here, but previous spy photos point to a slim light cluster with the latest BMW L-shaped graphics featuring back there.

Under the skin, the 2 Series Active Tourer is likely to feature a refined set of three- and four-cylinder petrol engines, complete with plug-in hybrid options.

The leaked image reveals a petrol 223i with front-wheel drive will be offered at launch, along with an all-wheel drive 230e plug-in hybrid.

The cabin is likely to feature the latest BMW iDrive 8, with a dual-screen setup that borrows from the iX electric SUV.

Production of the 2 Series Active Tourer is reportedly set to start in November 2021, so a launch in the coming weeks is likely.
