Haval has given its smallest SUV the hybrid treatment.

The 2022 Haval Jolion Hybrid has been revealed at the Great Wall Motors plant in Rayong, Thailand, and it’s likely to come Down Under.

CarExpert understands the Jolion Hybrid could be in Australia around the middle of 2022, at which point it’ll take on the Toyota C-HR, Subaru XV, and Kia Niro hybrids. It’ll sit alongside the Haval H6 Hybrid in showrooms, should it be confirmed.

Like the H6 Hybrid, the Jolion Hybrid we will likely see in Australia will be sourced from China instead of Thailand.

Power in the Jolion Hybrid comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine mated to an electric motor, sending a combined 140kW and 375Nm to the front wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Claimed fuel economy is 4.2 litres per 100km in Thailand, compared to the 8.1L/100km the non-hybrid Jolion uses on the combined cycle test.

The same hybrid powertrain in the H6 Hybrid makes a tyre-frying 179kW and 530Nm, but even in detuned form the hybrid Haval Jolion comfortably outguns its Japanese and Korean compact crossover rivals.

Externally, you’ll be able to differentiate the Jolion Hybrid from its petrol-only brothers by its unique grille, tweaked headlights, and bolder daytime running lights. Inside, the e-boosted crossover has a similarly long list of standard equipment to its petrol brothers.

In Thailand, it features a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, a 7.0-inch digital instrument binnacle, wireless phone charging, a head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Pricing for the Jolion currently tops out at $30,990 drive-away. Expect to pay a premium for the Hybrid, although it’s not clear exactly how much that premium will be.

The Jolion is Haval’s best-seller in Australia, although the GWM Ute that fits under the same corporate umbrella outsells it.

Haval has sold 2843 examples to date in 2021, putting it behind the Suzuki Vitara in the sales race.
