Electric vehicle (EV) startup Fisker has just revealed a “production-intent” version of its Ocean electric SUV at the 2021 Los Angeles motor show.
Shown in four different trim levels, the Fisker Ocean will be produced by Magna-Steyr at a carbon-neutral factory in Graz, Austria from November 17, 2022.
We’ve contacted Fisker to confirm if there are plans for an Australian launch.
The range opens with the Ocean Sport, priced at US$37,499 (A$51,614) before federal and state tax credits in the US.
It features a CATL-supplied lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that’s good for a claimed range of up to 402km on the US EPA test cycle, which usually yields lower range figures than the WLTP test cycle.
Powering the Ocean Sport is a single electric motor on the front axle that produces 205kW. Fisker claims it can do the 0-60mph (0-96km/h) sprint in 6.9 seconds.
The Ocean Ua is priced at US$49,999 (A$68,819) and features a CATL-supplied ‘Hyper Range’ battery pack with a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) cell chemistry. Claimed electric range is up to 547km.
The Ua features a dual-motor all-wheel drive system with a total system output of 402kW, good for a 0-60mph time of 3.9 seconds.
The top-of-the-range Ocean Extreme is priced at US$68,999 (A$94,971) and also features a CATL-supplied NMC battery that’s been reworked to provide an estimated range of more than 560km.
Ocean Extreme models also have a dual-motor all-wheel drive system that’s also been fettled to produce 410kW. Fisker claims this model can do the 0-60mph sprint in 3.6 seconds.
The first 5000 Ocean SUVs that’ll be produced will be a special launch edition version called the Ocean One.
These models will be priced at US$68,999 (A$94,971), which is the same price as the Ocean Extreme, but will feature more standard equipment, including 22-inch ‘F3 SlipStream’ wheels.
Ocean One models have the same NMC battery pack and dual-electric motors as the Ocean Extreme trim.
On high-spec Ocean Extreme and Ocean One trim levels Fisker incorporates a ‘SolarSky’ solar roof that Fisker claims can supply up to 3218km per year, or 2414km under the sunny skies in regions such as California.
All Ocean electric SUV models will come with some form of selectable drive modes, with the entry-level Sport getting ‘Earth’ and ‘Fun’ drive modes.
Ocean Ua and Extreme trim levels gain an additional ‘Hyper’ drive mode.
Lastly, Ocean Extreme and One trims will also have an off-road mode.
Every all-wheel drive trim level will be available with a ‘Smart Traction’ torque-vectoring system that’s said to enhance performance and safety.
Fisker Chairman and CEO Henrik Fisker said the Ocean was designed as a “true SUV” rather than an aerodynamic electric hatchback.
Featuring a sleek body, “ua-slim” lighting and large wheel arches, the Ocean has a wide stance and a distinctly SUV-like silhouette.
It measures in at 1994.5mm wide, 1631mm tall, and 4775mm long with a 2921mm wheelbase.
Optional across the Ocean range are 20-inch aero wheels, as well as three other 22-inch wheel options that are all wrapped in Bridgestone tyres said to enhance range and performance.
Available on the Ocean Ua, Extreme and One models is ‘California Mode’ that lowers all of the windows and retracts the sliding roof for a convertible-like experience.
The inside of the Fisker Ocean boasts a five-passenger seating layout with a “fully vegan” interior that uses recycled materials, including fishing nets, old t-shirts, and renewed rubber.
On the Ocean Extreme and One is the ‘Fisker HyperSound’ 16-speaker, 500W sound system with a 20.5L subwoofer.
There’s a standard 17.1-inch infotainment screen that can rotate from its default portrait position when driving to a landscape orientation when parked.
Fisker calls this landscape mode ‘Hollywood Mode’ and it’s presumably best used when the Ocean is charging.
Once the Ocean rolls off the production line and is delivered to owners, Fisker will be rolling out over-the-air updates to the vehicle so its features can be improved.
All Ocean electric SUVs will feature Fisker’s proprietary advanced driver assist system (ADAS) called ‘Fisker Intelligent Pilot’ that uses a radar, uasonic sensors and cameras to anticipate and prevent accidents.
Ocean SUVs will also feature a vehicle-to-load (V2L) mode that’ll allow owners to charge other EVs, send power to the grid, or use their vehicle as a back-up emergency power supply.
According to Fisker, the Ocean electric SUV will be available to purchase in the US at the end of 2022, but customers can reserve a vehicle today for a US$250 (A$344) deposit.
There’s also a leasing option that allows customers to lease an Ocean Sport for US$379 (A$521) per month after a one-time US$2999 (A$4127) activation and start-up fee.
This leasing option includes a 48,280km annual driving allowance and does away with the long-term commitment of actually buying the Ocean.
The company said it’ll provide more leasing terms on other trim levels at a later date.
