The Ford Mustang enters 2022 with a new California Special variant, standard Line Lock across the range, and numerous new paint colours.
The updated pony car will arrive in the second quarter of 2022, alongside the refreshed Focus ST.
All carryover Mustangs receive a price increase of around $1000.
Every example of the Mach 1 flagship has been allocated, with Ford advising there’s potentially only a tiny handful of this limited-run model left in its dealer network.
UPDATE, 21/12/2021 6:30pm – Ford has confirmed Magneride is also available on the California Special and confirmed the available colours for the new variant.
Sitting atop the range, if not directly replacing the Mach 1, is the new California Special fastback and convertible. It’s the first time this recurring special edition has been offered in Australia.
Based on the Mustang GT, it receives an appearance package with a heritage-inspired side stripe, unique badging including a GT/CS badge on the honeycomb grille, and a larger front splitter from the GT Performance Package.
A performance rear wing is available for the fastback, while the convertible goes without a spoiler. Both body styles ride on unique 19-inch painted machined wheels.
Inside there’s another badge, an instrument panel finished in carbon hex aluminium, black suede door trim inserts, and suede seats with an embossed logo and red contrast stitching.
Only left-hand drive imagery has been supplied thus far, so you’ll just need to imagine that the steering wheel is on the other side and the tail lights have clear lenses.
Every Mustang also receives updated Track Apps software for 2022, which finally enables the Line Lock function for the track.
For 2022, Ford has added Cyber Orange, Atlas Blue, Grabber Blue, Dark Matter Grey, Mischievous Purple and Eruption Green to the colour palette, with the latter two available from March production.
These replace Yellow Peel, Antimatter Blue, Velocity Blue, Twister Orange and Iconic Silver. The California Special is also available with the full palette bar Race Red and Eruption Green.
The Mustang remains far and away the best-selling sports car in Australia, with 2757 sales to the end of November 2021. That means it has a 56.2 per cent share of the Sports Under $80k segment in VFACTS.

The 2022 Ford Mustang High Performance uses a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine producing 236kW of power and 448Nm of torque, mated to either a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission.
The 2022 Ford Mustang GT and California Special use a naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine producing 339kW and 556Nm.
It’s also mated to either a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission.
The 2022 Ford Mustang High Performance consumes 8.8L/100km on the combined cycle with the manual transmission and 9.6L/100km with the automatic transmission.
The 2022 Ford Mustang GT consumes 13L/100km on the combined cycle with the manual transmission and 12.7L/100km with the automatic.
The four-cylinder Mustang High Performance runs on 91RON regular unleaded fuel and has a 59L fuel tank, while Ford recommends 98RON premium unleaded fuel for V8 models, which use a 61L fuel tank.
The 2022 Ford Mustang measures 4789mm long, 1387mm tall, and 1916mm wide on a 2720mm wheelbase.
Servicing and Warranty
All 2022 Ford Mustang models require servicing every 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first.
In addition to a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, Ford offers capped price servicing for four years or 60,000km. Each of these services costs $299.
The Ford Mustang has a three-star rating from ANCAP based on testing conducted in 2017.
That rating was based on an adult occupant protection score of 72 per cent, child occupant protection of 32 per cent, pedestrian protection of 78 per cent, and safety assist of 61 per cent.
