Alfa Romeo is sticking with its three-year warranty for now in Australia, but says it’s looking into demand for longer-lasting coverage.
A spokesperson for the brand said Alfa Romeo is “constantly evaluating” a longer warranty. CarExpert understands a move from three to five years is under consideration, but hasn’t been confirmed.
Alfa Romeo in November 2020 told media it has “more than adequate cover” through the combination of its three-year warranty and Australia’s strict consumer law requirements.
“The amount of obligation we have to the vehicle and the owner in Australia is intensive,” said Kevin Flynn, Stellantis Australia managing director.
Audi this morning confirmed it’s ditching its three-year warranty in favour of a five-year, unlimited-kilometre term.
The move brings Audi into line with Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, and Genesis, and leaves Alfa Romeo and BMW as the main remaining holdouts against the industry-wide push to stronger warranty coverage.
Porsche – which doesn’t sell cars in the same volumes as BMW or Audi, but offers SUVs at BMW and Audi-rivalling price points – also remains a holdout.
BMW and Porsche offer a three-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, Alfa Romeo offers three-years and 150,000km. BMW Australia today confirmed it has “no plans to change its warranty offering at this point”.
Hyundai Australia first moved from its three-year to a five-year warranty in 1999, and has stuck with it since.
Honda, Jeep and Skoda launched five-year warranties in 2017, followed by Ford, Mazda and Volkswagen in 2018. Subaru and Toyota also launched five-year warranty programs early in 2019.
Luxury manufacturers Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover, Lexus, and Volvo now have five-year warranties.
Mitsubishi is the only manufacturer that currently beats Kia’s seven-year warranty by offering a 10-year/200,000km warranty program.
There’s a catch though, as new Mitsubishi vehicles need to be serviced at a certified Mitsubishi dealer for the 10-year warranty period to count. The warranty period is shortened to five-years/100,000km if you service outside the dealer network.
