The cost of entry into a new Peugeot 5008 has leapt by almost $10,000.
The range now opens with a new, more comprehensively-equipped GT Sport petrol model.
It’s priced much closer to the GT diesel, which confusingly carried an $8000 premium over the GT petrol in last year’s line-up on account of various extra equipment items.
The new GT Sport petrol includes more standard equipment than the carryover diesel, but is priced $1050 less. It’s set to arrive in showrooms in the second quarter of 2022.
That includes the items from the diesel’s $4990 option package, including Nappa leather upholstery and a panoramic sunroof.
It also receives those features withheld from the defunct GT petrol, such as a 10-speaker Focal sound system, lane-positioning assist, and an eight-way power driver’s seat with massaging.
As in the related 3008 GT Sport, the new 5008 variant packs a more powerful version of Peugeot’s turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with 133kW of power and 250Nm of torque – up 12kW and 10Nm on the old GT petrol.
It’s mated with an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
It’s distinguished from the dead and surviving GT models with an exterior black pack, which includes 19-inch alloy wheels with a ‘Black Mist’ finish.
As for the $3000 price increase for the carryover diesel, Peugeot cites an increase in production costs.
It also cites demand for GT Sport variants of the redesigned 2008 and refreshed 3008 as the reason for the change in 5008 variants.
The 5008 is effectively a boxier, three-row version of the 3008.
While last year’s facelift of the mid-sized siblings juiced 3008 sales – increasing 33 per cent to 1172 units – the 5008 was down 21.9 per cent to just 189 units, which meant it outsold only its corporate cousin the Citroen C5 Aircross in this segment.

The 2022 Peugeot 5008 GT Sport uses a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 133kW of power and 250Nm of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
The GT diesel uses a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder with automatic stop/start, an eight-speed automatic, and outputs of 131kW and 400Nm.
The claimed 0-100km/h time for the GT diesel is 10.2 seconds. The GT Sport does the dash in a claimed 9.4 seconds.
Both models are front-wheel drive.
The 2022 Peugeot 5008 uses 5.0L/100km on the combined cycle in the diesel and 5.6L/100km in the petrol.
It has a 56L fuel tank.
The 2022 Peugeot 5008 measures 4641mm long, 1646mm tall, and 1844mm wide (2098mm including the mirrors) on a 2840mm wheelbase.
It has 952L of luggage space up to the window line with the third row folded. With the second and third row folded, there’s 2042L up to the roof.
Under the boot floor is a tyre repair kit in the diesel, however the GT Sport petrol has an 18-inch space saver wheel.
Kerb weight is 1524kg in the diesel and 1521kg in the petrol.
Both models have an unbraked towing capacity of 750kg, but braked towing capacity is 1800kg with the diesel and 1300kg with the petrol.
Servicing and Warranty
The 2022 Peugeot 5008 requires servicing every 12 months or 20,000km, whichever comes first. It’s backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and five years of capped-price servicing.
Peugeot offers five years of capped-price servicing. The first five services in the GT Sport petrol cost $397, $793, $397, $806, and $410 for a total of $2803.
The GT diesel costs $427, $752, $427, $781 and $456 for a total of $2841.
The Peugeot 5008 has a five-star rating from ANCAP based on testing conducted in 2016 of the 3008.
It received an adult occupant protection score of 86 per cent, child occupant protection of 85 per cent, pedestrian protection of 67 per cent and safety assist of 58 per cent.
